Actually Nytram, since it is the season of goodwill (No auntie, I really won't miss you when you are gone. The best I will do will be to piss on your grave to water the flowers), how about opening up the board to all comers for a couple of weeks?

That will make it easier for newbies to decide if they want to stay around and give us some trolls to torture if we get bored.

Wide open? To posting? Quite the anarchist aren't you?

biggrin

I'm thinking we open the general board to reading by visitors, giving them the chance to see what we're about while leaving the rest of the forum gated. If they want to post or read the other boards they should have to make the commitment of registering.

Personal invitations are always good.

smile

I would ask that that you let Ghostal or I know if you make an invitation. Saves us time.

You know if I owned a board I wouldn't care where or how folks found it. I'd just be happy to have them there. If some were to cause problems down the road I as owner/admin would be well equipped to deal with it.Few clicks, gone.I do hope you treat others who pass thru better than you have me otherwise your efforts will have been in vain.I found other boards along with this one in my search & have been welcomed warmly there & I have indeed opened up as I didn't feel threatened. Just accepted & invited to participate. No hint of a Spanish Inquisition whatsoever.

Merry Christmas to you all . smile

Still, it has to be said, if nothing else Low Fat Lenin has shown that trolls are easily handled.

So all that remains is for Nytram to get cracking......

There are many different types of messageboards out there.  Some are made up of conglomerations of complete strangers.  This is not one of them.

I'm glad you found what you are looking for.  Good fortune in the new year.

Is it too soon to send out invitations? I have about ten people in mind from another community who might fit in nicely. They range from age 40 to I think 79, and maybe a few from countries outside the US. I don't know much else about them, but they don't strike me as being trollish.

 Sounds good Dee.

Send out the invites.

I'm with Humdrum on this too. That was my vote as well. Hey everyone its Christmas so all in good cheer, lets make them welcome.smileI was wondering though if we can somehow push this thread more pawsitively towards being open to new folks coming here.biggrin

Actually, Ghostal, you will probably find that it is.

Nytram originally set this board up by plastering IMDB with invites, the gist of which was that posters could say or do whatever they liked, provided the police didn't call at his door.

So lots of folk turned up and had a whale of a time tossing and goring each other. Meanwhile the remaning IMDB posters kept their heads down because, well, that was the sort of folk they were.

But now we are running out of folk. So go away and drum up some more folk we can argue with.

PS

Good luck wih your exams.

Yeah, we ARE shrinking and slowing down...so this place needs new blood, something to perk up our "tired blood" (like in those old Geritol commercials...it was stuff that middle-aged and old folks took...for iron-deficiency anemia...). But how do you make sure it's not contaiminated by AIDS?

Invitation-only seems the right way to go...but in my case, I have nobody to invite! I don't go to any other boards anymore, save for one at IMDb (not the Soapbox, either)...and it has so many users, who are not all that close to one another, that there's no way I could see myself asking if any of them want to join Nytram's.

I doubt if any of them would be very interested...and they don't really know me and I don't really know them...not like the way it is here, anyway. I don't even know if they'd be all that compatible with us, or us with them. All we have in common is that we are die-hard fans of a VERY popular show on AMC...one that is about to enter its sixth season. So I have been there for a few years. But that's the only other place I ever visit.

Except for that place...this is all there is...at least for me. If this place goes down, or if I ease on down the road...that's it for me, as far as messageboarding is concerned. Not much to show for thirteen years online, is it? All I have left, after thirteen years, are you guys. But some of you go back nearly that far with me. I wouldn't have it any other way.

If we get more members, through invites, that's fine...as long as they fit in and aren't here to troll or stalk individuals. If we don't get any...well, that's okay, too. I will blow with the wind...and right now, the wind is blowing in favor of expansion.

But all I have to offer you folks is Lucinda...and that ain't gonna happen. She's happily enrolled elsewhere, and doesn't want to join up. Her choice, I guess. I have long since stopped asking her. It hasn't happened in the last seven years, and it won't happen in the next seven. Assuming we are around that long. Which I wouldn't bet the rent on.

Okay, folks...send 'em over and sign 'em up. New audiences for my old stories, most of which you have already heard. But they haven't heard any of them yet.

-73- and good night.

Charlie

The autumn of 2005 was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.  After IMDb became so Islam-sensitive that we couldn't even write Muslim or Islam on a title line without it being promptly deleted, despite the possibility of the message being complimentary or positive toward Islam, just summarily poofed, Nytram mentioned that a board he'd established several years before was available.

He didn't "plaster" IMDb with invitations--he wrote about it after nt-250 had her bellicose behind banned from IMDb for expressing her opinion about Islam.  She'd evidently picked up the NytramsPlace URL from his profile at IMDb, and while checking the site, he found her there all by her lonesomeness and let it be known that there was a place where we were free to write what we pleased as long as what we wrote didn't bring the law to his door.  That's pretty damned generous.

So, the first few years, 2005 through what, maybe 2009, a forum eventually became a community.  nt-250 self-destructed after only a couple years, single-sighted entities like Tall Rep and his minions kept trying to insult and defame others among us, that Canadian guy with the autistic son kept posting while soused, and JW always had to try to turn everything into a political or historical debate.

If I wanted any of that crap any more, I wouldn't be here.  After 14 1/2 years of being online and messing around with message boards, here's what I want from one:

Courtesy and respect

Disagreement without insult

Consideration of all aspects of an issue

Comraderie, caring, friendship

Laughter, whimsy, light-heartedness

And a thought about maybe one of us hasn't had an entirely good day.

...no, wait...you are all the jewels in the crown...

If Nytram's board were a country...you, my dear, would be a national treasure.aww

If you ever do decide to delete your account...I will be gone by the next day. No joke. I have never been more serious.

Thank you for the last eleven years...from the heart...

Just for my two cents, that's an excellent thought, Dee.

Actually, he didn't just check the site randomly. We were there everyday! ...and then finally a lot of other people started to show up once imdb started banning. There were a few other people way before that though. I remember in particular one really creepy Brazilian guy who always messaged nytram asking if he could eat his cats.  biggrin  I had another fairly popular forum at the time with a website dedicated to it. I got lazy and let it die, but kept helping out here because it was needed. I always helped behind the scenes though because people at the early board wouldn't have liked knowing they were being watched. biggrin

I'm glad we missed the Brazilian.
