I only answer my phone if I am reasonably sure who is on the other end. If I miss a valid call, they can leave a  message.

Good to know Dee. Thanks for posting the warning. I get a lot of strangers calling to tell me my computer will fail in the next few minutes or We an fix your computer now over the phone... Now I just tell them I do not have a computer!!! And then I hang up. Just before Christmas week I got 5 calls and three were with in  the same day.furious

A friend  of mine is going to help set the phone so I can read the caller I.D. The instructions  sound Greek to me. Ed has even tried to add the settings and so on but he is miffed and he is pretty sharp when it comes to being Tech savvy.smile

That same story just appeared, at noon today, one one of our own local news outlets...Channel 5, I think...or maybe it was Channel 8.
From now on, when I answer the phone, I will probably say "Go fuck yourself!" even more than I already do. Ninety percent of our calls are scammers.
We hardly get any calls from friends and family anymore. Most of the stuff on the caller ID says "Unavailable" and "Unknown"...making it worthless.

Pretty soon the phone will be so overrun with scammers that it will become unusable. Once you turn 60, you're screwed.
You automatically go onto the "Rich old gullible easy-mark confused senior sucker list." And the shit never stops, until you are dead.

Sometimes I pick up the phone just to fuck with these clowns, especially when I'm in a bad mood...which is most of the time these days.
I will swear at them, mess with their heads, drop the phone onto the floor and walk away, threaten to kill them, or even blow my NFL ref's whistle at them.
They will lose their jobs when they go deaf from its shrill sound, and starve in the streets of Bombay...or whatever they call it now. Tough titty.

I will continue to let them know that they picked the wrong geezer to call. And if they manage to succeed, let them try to threaten to sue me. THAT is all bullshit.

I ONLY answer calls from people in my contacts list. As Dee says, all others can leave a voice mail, scammers won't do that. I did find putting myself on the no call list eliminated about 90% of the bullshit calls.

I went on the Do Not Call List on Day One, back in 2003.
The scammers have found ways to outfox it. It's worthless.
Your Caller ID says California? Yeah...Manila, California.

For it to be effective you have to reregister every couple of years.

I never answer my phone, except on the rare occasions I happen to be in the front bedroom where the Caller ID machine is and I recognize the number.  I let the answering machine deal with the other 99 per cent.

Thanks for the warning. Especially since Time is very hard of hearing.

That makes it even rougher.  I've read a number of reports over the past few years about "The Grandparents' Scam"--folks pretending to be grandchildren call to say they're in jail and need bond money, or they were robbed while traveling and need money to get home, that sort of thing.  I suppose they figure out grandchildrens' names by pouring through Facebook and other social sites.

Good to have you back here, Suzi. smile

The grandchild scam is one I have heard about. I am naturally suspicious I just say "I neither buy nor donate anything over the phone".

Thanks

You're more than welcome!  I've always enjoyed your stories about when you and Time lived in the U.S. Southwest before you moved to Canada.

Getting back to grandchildren, if any of the Golden Guy's three by his first wife ever called with such claims, I'd tell them (if I even answered the call) to take it up with their mother.
