Had to look up that one, not a quote that was taught in high school, for sure.  Denis Diderot, sometime in the 18th century, I found out.  For some reason, after the mention of entrails, my first thought was some Aztec ruler. confuse

Thanks Kitty! In the book I was reading, it was attributed to Louisa Mae Alcott but that didn't sound right. I thought Nytram might enjoy the quote; I know I did.

This post could go on; post your favourite quotes here and ask who first said it.

 That is the boy.

It was actually a put down by Daniel O'Connell, rather than the up you Mick comment generally ascribed to the Duke of Wellington

"... certain informal discussions took place involving a full and frank exchange of views out of which there arose a series of proposals, which on examination proved to indicate certain promising lines of inquiry, which, when pursued, lead to the realization that the alternative courses of action might, in fact, in certain circumstances, be susceptible of discreet modification, leading to a reappraisal of the original areas of difference and pointing the way to encouraging possibilities of compromise and cooperation, which, if bilaterally implemented with appropriate give and take on both sides might, if the climate were right, have a reasonable probability at the end of the day of leading, rightly or wrongly, to a mutually satisfactory resolution."

"There are few good things, things that is of lasting importance, that may happen to a man unexpectedly. Disaster however, may strike from innumerable directions and in amazingly diverse ways" .

This one always stuck with me.

Had to hunt for that one, too.  Best I can up with come is Frederic Brown, although he's quoted as using "are," as he should have, not "is."

I'd like to see this thread become a bit less obscure, as in

Yep, Frederick Brown from the short story 'Come and go Mad,' Guy has an argument with his wife. She hops in the car a squeals off in a huff, gets in an accident and dies. A couple of weeks later the guy starts time tripping. Each trip brings him closer to the moment his wife gets in the car. The moment when he could have said 'I'm sorry' and saved her life.
