Considering the rackety state of Amazon's finances I am surprised that our Jeff can afford the cab fare from one side of Seattle to the other, but it is a happy dream

I think his proposal makes a lot more sense than a settlement on Mars. Any off-world settlement will be dependent on supplies from Earth for a very long time so it makes sense to keep the supply lines short. A week or less for the moon, several hundred days for Mars.

 Balls.

If we waited to get our shit together you wouldn't be here because Columbus would have spent his life sitting in a pub in Genoa telling everyone that one of these days he was going to write a letter to Queen Isabella and suggesting that she set up a committee to examine the possibility of sending a ship out of the sight of land.

This continent and the planet would probably have been better off if he had stayed home.

Now there's an interesting premise for a TV show...

Now Boosey we all know the Vikings got to North America long before Columbus. Just ask any Canadian.wink Besides he never set foot on America. He just seen it perhaps through the fog of the grog he was drinking on ship. I watched "Expedition Unknown" just last evening and Josh found a rock with Viking writings in a Port not far from Boston. Of course it is unlikely this discovery will change historical writings of Columbus because he was Catholic and the Vikings believed in their own gods and Valhalla.

Just a thought,

Uni

You may well be right Uni, although I suspect some of the Norse sagas contain as much fantasy as fact.

But I can believe the bit about the grog. I have just glanced through "The Spanish Armada: The Experience of War in 1588" by Dr Felipe Fernandez-Armesto and apart from the bit where he as near as damnit claims that the Spanish won, he is pretty good researchwise. And according to him the Spanish matelots did like to raise a glass

Well actually there is proven facts of the Vikings not only landing here but living here as well. At least for a time. There is a Viking  settlement called A'ancb  Meadows on Newfoundland. It was built by the Vikings after 900AD and before 1100AD, long before Columbus. I am not positive of the exact date. But they settled there and farmed there and raised families as well. To the best of my knowledge no one knows what happened to them. The first Nations peoples say there are legends of "white Indians" who lived and intermixed with them.

Today it brings in many tourists.

Take care,

Uni
