1950 Packard  Deluxe

When I was four or five years old and still living in a third-floor apartment on the West Side of Chicago, our downstairs hillbilly neighbors owned one of those Packards...same year, model, and color. They were enormous. That family had four kids, and their father used to take them for rides, and sometimes I would get to go along. My sister had just been born, so I think my mother was happy to get me out of her hair for a while.

The car was huge, and it had a wide shelf under the rear window, wide enough for the driver's youngest son, who was my age, to lie horizontally on it, just under the glass.

And the rides were always noisy and bumpy, but fun. They were noisy and bumpy because Chicago still had streetcar tracks set in streets paved with dark red bricks, which made for an extremely rough ride. And the streetcar wheels would screech horribly as they made turns. Sometimes the overhead trolley wires would emit crackling noises and showers of sparks during those turns. But that only added to the fun.

Steel wheels on curved steel rails made plenty of noise when streetcars made turns...as in this 1952 image on Chicago's West Side...

So what the hell starts with the letter Q, anyhoo?

It's a bike...it's a car...no...it's a quadricycle...

(Made in India, by Mahindra...which also makes yard and farm equipment...)

W O W ! ! !

That is, without a doubt, an image of the Old Orchard shopping center, three miles from the house I grew up in.

The building with the striped awning was Edward's Restaurant...

Had many a fried-shrimp dinner there with my parents, on Sundays.

It's now a Jewish deli called The Bagel. Chicken soup and chopped liver to die for.

The red roof is over a covered sidewalk.

The windowless building was, in 1959, a suburban branch of the Marshall Field's department store downtown. Probably a Macy's now.

Same three medallions were on the outer wall back then. And the sign (correctly) says EAST parking lot.

God, I wish I had a framed copy of this classic piece of Fifties display advertising...it's nostalgia! It's art! It's my hometown!

I posted this same image in June of 2017...and it went poof...I have no idea why...

If it happens again...you will see the Eastland...the ship that capsized in Chicago in 1915)

Produced in the late 60's at a cost of $300,000. Only three were built.

1971 Honda Civic

"Mike" from All in the Family was popular then, so Lucinda called this make and model "the Honda Stivic"
