Computer illiterate would appreciate some advice

I am looking for a complete prat's guide to computing and any advice would be appreciated. I usually bribe the grandchildren, but even they are getting sick of me.

My current problem is this.

If I go to this site..

https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=PFC.L&b=4&a=01&c=2015&e=3&d=01&f=2016&g=w

and click on Download to spread sheet, then two things happen.

If I have Excel then all the data ends up on a spreadsheet, which is all fine and large.

But if I don't have Excel but Open Office, which is free but a pain in the nether regions, all the bumph appears on Notepad and is unreadable.

The obvious and best answer would be to stop being cheap and buy some more Excel packages, but even I am getting tired of being so ignorant  of these electronic adding machines.

So, first question, why does the download end up Notepad?

And two, how do I get the data out of Notepad and onto an Open Office spreadsheet?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Aren't you able to choose where the download ends up? When the pop up window shows and it says open with, make sure that box is ticked (or circle), and Excel might be default. But click on the little down carat and other options will open up, one being office. Notepad is also there excel.jpgexcel2.jpg

Thanks Mae.

I that I have cracked it.

As you said, the first step was to find out where everything went and take it from there.

The CVS files all ended up in Notepad. Mine is an elderly brain and any sort of thought confuses me. So it took some time to twig that instead of exporting the bumf from Notepad to Open Office Calc, it might be easier to do it the other way round. Which I did,
